May Apples

May 15th, 2009 by: Kathleen

It’s May 15 and May Apples are up and blooming. They are such a humble flower, hiding below their umbrella leaves, happy to be facing the earth, not striving for more glory or any glory at all.

This is a link to a nice Wisconsin wildflower site on the web. May Apples show their apples in fall or late summer. The root is toxic.

I have a small patch of Mayapples and I have planted then near the wild ginger which also hides its red flower under the leaf. This time of year I walk through my gardens 3-4 times a day to see the wild geraniums starting to bloom; note the progress of the jack-in-the pulpits, and sigh as the blooms of the bloodroot are already past and the leaves have unfurled.

Sounds beautiful. I had huge Jack in the Pulpits in my garden that I had at a previous home.
