Cedars on the Prairie

blue cones on the cedar

My prairie is dotted with red cedar which is a type of juniper. The blue cones look like berries.

Bracing air when I went out the door this morning and the dogs and I walked our prairie. Frost on the meadow…….

November gray

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

What a typical November day this is.  Gray sky, cold, light rain, oak leaves swirling in the sky.  Saw a perfect raccoon paw print in my drive way.  A dozen crows calling and circling in the sky.  A fat gray squirrel keeps visiting my bird feeder.  He’ll be stoked up for winter.  The velvet gray of the sand hill cranes can still be seen.   Some groups have not left for warmer weather yet.

Montello Lake color

beautiful November color on Montello Lake  The drawdown on Montello Lake may look unsightly to some people, but the reflection of the fall colors onto the water makes it lovely.  The warm weather means you can get out and walk through crunching leaves and the smell of fall.   Montello Lake is the mill pond and once was just the river coursing through a prairie.
