The pigeons returned home!

I sure had a good time last Friday.  I learned a lot about Purple Martins and homing or racing pigeons.  Plus other things.  And it was so much fun using our saunter sticks.  Here are some photos of our adventure.

Be sure to take your families out to the County C Boat Landing, nature trail and historical kiosk. You can teach them how the railroad once ran there and how the steam boats used to run up and down the Fox River.

I love Purple martins! And it was so cool to see them circling their nesting box that was put up by Muirland Bird Club. Thanks Daryl for showing us how he checks the nests.

You can see Martins in this photo. They're waiting for their house to get cranked back up.

I didn't know that Purple Martins line their nests with Mulberry leaves. That is so interesting. It's so nice to provide homes for birds.

Thank you Fritz Menke for teaching us about racing or homing pigeons. They are beautiful and very special birds. Did you know there is a racing pigeon club right in Montello?

Here's another photo of that beautiful pigeon. They fly so fast and face so many obstacles and can find their way from miles and miles away.

Thank you Mrs. Lind for letting us wait for the pigeons in your yard and for the cookies and water. Even if we didn't see the pigeons come home, we had fun and learned a lot.

And not to worry! The pigeons began returning about 20 minutes after you left. Bill Lind said they had never been released from that spot or direction before and it took them that long to get their bearings and know which way to head home. They all were in a race the next day and flew 500 miles home to Montello!!

Be sure to take your families to the Apuckawa Nature Trail and Boat Landing so you can walk the nice nature trail there.  The guide and map are in your Howard and Betty book that you can take home at the end of the year.

Until next time!!!!!  And thanks to all our helpers.
