Red Cedar Cones

Some people don’t like red cedar, but I leave them grow on my land and watch the cedar wax wings eat the blue cones, which look like berries, on the dark green branches in the winter.   Indigo buntings and gray catbirds often use the papery bark of a cedar to build their nests come spring.  Others build their nests within the prickly branches, out of reach of predators.
